State Coverage Initiatives (SCI) works with states to plan, execute, and maintain health insurance expansions, as well as to improve the availability and affordability of health care coverage. SCI is a national program of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) administered by AcademyHealth.

SCI's team to policy experts tailors its approach to meet state decision maker's needs and helps create coverage solutions within the context of each state's unique fiscal and political environment. Our hands-on technical assistance is confidential, non-partisan, and supported by RWJF, so there is no cost to the state.

We help states develop approaches to expand coverage to working families and other uninsured groups through public programs such as Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), as well as private market strategies. We do this by fostering collaboration among stakeholders to build political will for health coverage expansions.

SCI also offers grants designed to support states in the early stages of planning coverage expansions and those that have decided on a new expansion mechanism and seek assistance in designing and implementing the program. Specific new grant opportunities are announced on our Web site and through our e-newsletter, St@teside; however, states may submit project ideas at any time. To learn more about current and past state grants, visit the Grants section of our Web site.
